Pete Seeger, folk singer and social justice activist died on Monday. As confirmed by his grandson, Kitama Cahill Jackson, Seeger died of natural causes at the age of 94.
He is widely known for songs like; “If I Had a Hammer,” ‘’Turn, Turn, Turn,” ‘’Where Have All the Flowers Gone” and “Kisses Sweeter Than Wine.”
During his lengthy musical career he was praised for his advocacy of various left wing causes: the labour movement in the 1940’s and ’50s, for civil rights and the Vietnam War in the ’60s, and for environmental and antiwar causes in the ’70s and later years. His anti-war stance was largely due to the effects of his own experiences during World War 2.
This advocacy remained unchanged throughout the years, highlighted by the role he played in the occupy Wall Street protests of 2011.
